Walking door-to-door over the past few months, I have talked to and surveyed thousands of District 4 voters.  These initial positions reflect neighborhood concerns and more than eleven years of representing the district.

Schools & Families

"With eleven years of School Board experience, I can provide real expertise on how the City and Schools can partner to better support our students and serve all citizens."
  • Expand libraries and hours; technology access

  • Increase after school programs

  • Revitalize parks and recreation services with greater neighborhood input

  • Increase neighborhood and school art programs

  • More support for our zoo, museums, theaters and other cultural institutions such as the Chabot Science Center, the Oakland Symphony and neighborhood art groups

Neighborhood Safety and Emergency Preparedness

"Now, more than ever, the safety of our community must be our top priority. I will build on my previous efforts on behalf of our schools to ensure the safety of all who live and work in Oakland."

  • Expand community policing

  • Support neighborhood community policing councils

  • Provide ongoing training for Citizens of Oakland Respond to Emergencies (CORE) teams and Neighborhood Watch groups

  • Improve vegetation control

  • Improve and repair public stairs, bike lanes, sidewalks, streets and storm drains

Remove Blight, Litter & Enhance Our Environment

"I will continue my efforts to coordinate neighborhood clean-ups and litter control as well as development of public gardens, parks and streams."

  • Organize city and school support of neighborhoods clean-up and litter campaigns.

  • Increase the number of trash cans on major thoroughfare

  • Increase number of bulky pick-ups per neighborhood

  • Increase parks, playing fields and preserve green space

  • Enforce blight laws

Support More Jobs, Housing and Retail

"We need to attract business, especially retail shopping, that will allow us to keep tax dollars and jobs in Oakland."

  • Support neighborhood and downtown retail efforts in addition to major development

  • Find ways so that working families can continue to live and work in Oakland

  • Encourage joint efforts between the city and schools to build affordable housing for teachers and other workers

  • Increase joint job training programs and support for high school career academies

Full-Time Council Commitment

"Our district needs a full-time councilperson.  For over a decade I worked 60-80 hours per week as a school board member.  I am committed to making the time to be present and accessible to every neighborhood in our district."

  • Council staff will be hired to help neighborhoods organize themselves and to provide responsive constituent service

  • Maintain monthly office hours and forums for information and feedback

  • Continue monthly newsletters and email alerts
